Damon Eastaugh wins 2006/07 Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 February, 2007 : - - Damon Eastaugh has won the Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards for his monster wave ridden at Xbox in Western Australia.

Eastaugh, from Margaret River, was one of many riders that enjoyed an historic day on July 5 at the offshore shelf. A daylong frenzy in perfect conditions and the biggest surf ever ridden in Australia attracted a host of entries for the awards.

The judges estimated Eastaugh's winning wave height at between 48 and 52 feet. A previous winner of the award in 2003/04, he scored $20,000 for his effort.

The award for Biggest Paddle-In went to Kiwi nutter Daniel Kereopa for his crazy ride at Papatowai in New Zealand’s deep south on June 15. Kereopa spent eight hours in eight-degree water.

Margaret River’s Damien Warr took out the Best Performance Overall for his efforts at Xbox on July 5. Warr, the only goofy-footer on the day, broke his board on the second wave he caught so spent the remainder of the day on an unfamiliar solid balsa wood board borrowed from a mate.

Kereopa won $5000, while Warr picked up $3000.
