Jay Moriarity dies in free diving accident in Maldives

Jay Moriarity dies in the Maldives.

Frank Quirarte brings us the sad news.

With a heavy heart I send this message. For those who have not yet heard, Santa Cruz, Mavericks and the surfing world has lost one of its favorite sons. Jay Moriarity, of Santa Cruz lost his life to an unfortunate free diving accident while on tour with Team O´Niell in the Republic of the Maldives.

Moriarity had gone diving alone. When he didn¹t show up for lunch or dinner, his friends grew concerned. Several hours later, they discovered his body in the water near the dive spot. No more details were known of the accident.

This morning the rest of Santa Cruz woke up to the front page of the Sentinel (SC´s morning paper). It posted a huge photo of Jay riding the nose on a perfect wave. And the first of what will be many tributes to Jay took place at Cowells Beach.

The children of The Ride a Wave program gathered together with Neil Matthies, Danny Cortazo, Mike and Sarah Gerhardt and a group of Jay´s friends to say a prayer and say goodbye by throwing yellow daisies into the break. East Cliff Ave. that runs by Pleasure Point and where Jay and his wife Kim lived is now lined with beautiful flower and photo tributes. Well wishers wrote notes to Jay on the fences and folks were just walking around in shock.

Up at Half Moon Bay Eric Nelson and Curt Myers were screening their new Mavericks movie at Jeff Clark´s Surfshop, Whipped. At the end of the screening they added a wonderful tribute to Jay. Shawn Alladio has checked in from South Africa and the Dungeons Big Wave crew will be honoring Jay with a paddle out on Sunday.

As far as the premier for Year of the Drag-In this coming weekend we have made the decision to press on. Jay is a huge part of the movie as well as Mavericks. I can truly speak for everyone at Mav´s saying that Jay was a best friend and was loved and respected by all of us. And I believe ROD is a tribute to his life and his true stoke for surfing. We are putting together some of our best memories of Jay and will honor him at the premier. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Kim Moriarity. So please come and help celebrate the life Jay!

We have set up our forums so that you may leave a message, condolences or just a Jay Moriarity "smiling" story for the family. And if you never had the privilege to meet him, check out some of the post already left. When time passes we will print them all and give them to Kim and the family to read. I thank all of our users for being respectful during this terrible time.

No funeral arrangements have been made. The Mavericks/Santa Cruz crew is planning a paddle out in honor of Jay as well a paddle out at Pleasure Point for all to attend. Check back for more details or check in with Mavericksurf

Aloha to all, Aloha to our Bra . . .

Live Like Jay - o - Jay Moriarity - A legend Before His Time

LIVE LIKE JAY

Jay Moriarity - A legend Before His Time

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 May, 2005 : - - Sometimes a person crosses your path and leaves an indelible mark of significance on your soul, you just can’t shake that there is something different about them. Jay Moriarity is one of these people.

Jay made a spectacular appearance at Mavericks, a big wave surfing spot in Central California, as a 16 year old big wave surfer for a fateful wipeout on December 19th, 1994, the year Mark Foo drowned there. Jay arms spread straight out in a crucified stance with his big wave surfboard planted squarely in front of his body, stopped in a moment of time on top of a gigantic wave, earning him the classic ‘Iron Cross’ photo as he fell 5 stories to the impact zone lurking below. He was given the title the “Prince of Mavericks” because of his peaceful disposition.

Jay was from Santa Cruz, California and quickly began traveling the world, his name recognized everywhere, but it was his personality that struck people. Jay was an original soul, everyone like him. Jay is gone, but not forgotten.

Jay drowned on a surfing excursion in the Maldives on June 15th, 2002 one day before his 23rd birthday, training for the upcoming big wave season in an unfortunate free diving accident. His widow Kim Moriarity created the Jay Moriarity Foundation to educate children about surfing and water safety with her appropriate description of her husband’s spirit: “LIVE LIKE JAY”. Kim’s dedication to her husband and the community amidst her own tragedy remind us to dedicate ourselves towards service to others by choosing to: ‘Follow Your True Path, From Your Heart’.

Jay was preparing for his future, besides a professional surfing career, he was planning to be a fireman. He asked me about getting trained for water rescue on a PWC and also for towsurfing. He had been mentored by ‘Frosty’, a Santa Cruz surfing legend, and was partnering with Jeff Clark for towsurfing at Mavericks. Jeff promoted safety and education as a commitment to towsurfing at Mavericks, and Jay soon took a course. He and his wife Kim were both getting certifications so they could both work in the same fields.

The Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards dedicated an Overall Performance award in Jay’s name, a paddleboard race in Santa Cruz bears his namesake, and he’s a lifetime member for the Mavericks Big Wave contest. Sometimes we use quotes to motivate us, and sometimes our friendships help us to keep us on track. Jay’s life is one to aspire to, service to others, compassion and a determination to live each moment as a testimony to living well. Make a difference in the life of others, ride responsibility and show courtesy to those you meet. Leave something behind worthwhile to share.

The Jay Moriarity Foundation is a non-profit organization created in the spirit of Jay to improve the Quality of Life. We support existing programs designed to help others and our Environment, as well as forming new ways to educate and assist our youth along their path.
