Dates Set For 3rd Annual Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic
February 26, 2007 Behemoth LLC and TAOW Productions today announced plans for the 3rd annual Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic, an invitational surfing competition attracting the world's best tow surfers and ambassadors of the sport. The competition will take place in Lincoln City, Oregon, sometime between October 1 and December 31. As traditional for such "big wave" competitions, the exact date of the event will depend upon wave conditions, which will be continually monitored during the holding period. Once maximum wave conditions are observed, competitors and fans from around the world will have 48 hours notice to arrive.
Nelscott Reef is a relatively new find for big wave surfers. In an area not typically considered a prime surfing region, this site, located approximately 88 miles southwest of Portland, has proven to be one of the best performance big waves in the world.
"Some of the greatest tow surfers from around the world will be waiting anxiously for the word from event officials that it's time to descend upon Nelscott Reef," said John Forse, event organizer. "Those who attended last year's event are still talking about the 40-foot waves and near perfect surfing conditions."
In 2006, reigning world champions Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala were able to out surf other world-class competitors including such teams as Brad Gerlach and Mike Parsons, Adam Replogle and Alistair Craft, Raph Bruhwiler and Keith Malloy and Greg and Rusty Long.
Talking about the event itself, McNamara told Transworld Surf Magazine, "It was the best, most positive, friendliest contest atmosphere I've experienced in my whole life...the guys at Nelscott set the bar so high with this contest that anybody whoever decides to produce a big contest is going to have a tough time topping them."
The Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic is the only tow-in contest on the North American continent. For more information visit www.nelscottreef.com .
