GREEN IS GOOD

"There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew."
- Marshall McLuhan

Edition Green
We should have done this 30 years ago.

With issue number 42, THE SURFER'S PATH becomes the first "green" surf magazine. It's printed on 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper (processed without chlorine bleach) with non-GMO soy inks.

In the bottom-line-driven world of magazine publishing, this is a heroic act, and we editors and staff of the PATH offer deep respect and appreciation to our publisher, Jim Peskett, for biting the bullet and leading us onto this groundbreaking path.

Someday (and the sooner the smarter for all of us) sustainability will be a cornerstone of all human activities, as sure as necessity is the mother of invention. Long before (I hope), all surfing magazines, if they exist, will be printed according to appropriate "green" standards.

It's simple common sense: the survival of our surf spots is directly linked to the health of our rivers and streams, and the wholesale clear-cutting of forest ecosystems, along with the treatment of wood pulp with toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach in the manufacturing of paper, link directly to many of the water-quality problems being addressed by numerous global environmental organizations, like Surfrider and Save Our Surf.

Given the condition of the planet, surfers above all should be sensitive to the very large realities behind the principle of sustainability . before our seas perish and our reefs. Because it's all connected - watershed, stream, and forest, sea, reef, and ocean water - a cycle and a circle.

Change isn't foreseen by demographics and so-called experts; they just give you the status quo. Change comes out of the blue - out of spontaneous brilliance, accident, serendipity, and . necessity. And, to be honest, we know that this green shift is necessary.

Regarding the impacts of these green materials on our magazine's colorful, glossy, and uncluttered layout, as you can see, the production values are remarkably similar to our previous high-quality paper stock and inks.

Of course, such good things come at a cost. This paper and ink cost considerably more than conventional print materials, and the added expense is figured into our new selling price.

After billions of dollars of environmental education, it's time we gave our customers in surf shops, book stores, and newsstands a choice.

We believe that you, our readers, are intelligent enough to know the difference and will support our efforts to bring you a more sustainably-produced (and even more excellent) surf magazine.

You can save a good deal of money and also show support for our new direction by subscribing to the mag. Do it online to save paper and postage: www.surferspath.com

Another significant development this issue: putting a name to the obvious. Often referred to as "that English magazine," this publication has, in fact, always been global in perspective. Now we've changed the cover logo to reflect this fact.

THE SURFER'S PATH . International.

Global Green Soul.

That's it. End of written speech. Now, please help us out:

Subscribe (go online), spread the word, participate (we love to hear from you!), and leave the beach cleaner than you found it. And smile, too, dammit!

After all, we're havin' fun.
