No tow-in on chaotic swell

by The Garden Island

Organizers of the 3rd Annual North Shore Tow-In Surfing Championship predicted the arrival of the large swell and strong shear line that reached Hawai‘i Monday.

High surf warnings were posted along with warnings of costal damage due to strong southwest winds that kept wind warnings posted as gusts reached up to 60 mph in some areas.

Contest directors predicted the swell to be chaotic with competitors surfing odd spots along the coastline including 2-foot “Chocolates,” a spot behind Surf-N-Sea Surf Shop in Hale‘iwa.

Outside reefs reached 20 feet on Monday with windblown conditions and peaked yesterday with similar conditions.

Additional swells are tracking along the very low jet stream and will continue to bring back-to-back large episodes that hold little potential to hold a tow-in event.

And just to keep everyone hopping, a 6.8 earthquake located near Tasmania near Macquarie Island shook up tsunami watchers, though no tsunami was generated.

Contest officials will continue to monitor these large episode swells. For updated information and event status, visit protowsurfers.org.

This year’s event will take place one day only on the biggest and best day of surf between Dec. 15 and March 31, on one of two main, big-wave, outer reef spots more than a mile outside Hale‘iwa Harbor known as “Outside Avalanche” and “Outside Pua‘ena Point.”
