K38 UK
Towsurfer

I have just spent the last three months traveling between Mumbles, Gower and Newquay in Cornwall training for the K38 Tow surf operator course run by big wave legend and Chairman of the British Tow Surfing Association, Chris Bertish.

GSD has joined several clubs both in Wales and in Cornwall which then permit launch of the ski for tow surfing training and operations. I can honestly say that the K38 training course was one of the most educational I have been on.

The training was all about safety, first aid, risk analysis, required equipment, pick ups and rescues of the athelete (tow surfer) For more information on the course se the link below for Shawn Alladio.

Chris told us that every time you go out and train or operate you are learning, which is something Shawn Alladio had told him.

I now realise that prior to this K38 course I did not have a clue about P.W.C's and the massive preparation that is needed to tow surf the outer banks. My training has just started, I am now going to book myself on to a VHF radio operator course and in the summer get training from the RYA on reading charts and plotting courses.

One of the main things that come through was the need for team work and 'slow is pro'. I have learned that GSD's P.W.C is not a toy for my friends or staff to race around the bay on.

No, it is a vital piece of equipment that must be maintained checked and double checked. The ski, can in the right hands, i.e those that have been trained save lives, perform extreme rescues and tow athletes into XXL waves way out in the middle of the ocean.

SurfGSD and I are just starting out on this new activity and are excited that we have already learned so much thanks to Chris Bertish and K38.

I am one of the highest qualified BSA surf coaches in the UK and run one of the top surfing development centres in the UK.

I have a gorgeous five year old daughter called Isabella who stood up on a surfboard at the age of three with the help of Beth Mason, Gwen Spurlock and Rebecca Templeton (3 of the top female surfers here in the UK at the moment).

Isabella attended the junior surfing academy last summer (2006) and can not wait until next summer.

Live, Surf, Travel ? Well, once you have caught that first wave you become another surf addict. Which will mean that everything in your life revolves around catching that 'one wave'.

Happy surfing,

Chris Bertish is not only a good friend of mine but one of the few people that I trust in the most challenging of surfing conditions. Chris, simply in my view is one of the best big wave surfers in the world.

Carlos Burle was over from Hawaii, and Bertish was over from the UK heading now down to home, South Africa, but first we were honored to have him hang out with us while the ocean wasn't cooperating, so we feasted and celebrated Xmas every day even tho' Xmas was over..LOL. Here is our family pic. We did a lot of eating those days. Shaniah scored big time with 2 uncles in the house!

Chris stopped by to say goodbye before getting on the jet to South Africa. Out on the deck overlooking the Pillar Point, we said our goodbyes. I met Chris in 2000 in South Africa, its sure cool to see him over here, he hit up Nelscott Reef with Jeff Clark and Hawaii, and got some insane sessions, because literally he's the stealth surfer, Chris will go, he'll paddle first and go, no matter what, he's dedicated and focused. I admire him a lot.

Brave Neptune's wrath to claim rewards
Sports staff

SOUTH Africa has some of the best big wave surfers in the world and they have been handed another excuse to brave the most monstrous parts of the ocean, with the launch of the O'Neill Big Wave Raw Courage Awards.

The event will be run over an entire year, with the competition ending on 20 May, 2008, and boast R50 000 in prize money. The Raw Courage Awards is solely a big wave recognition event and emphasises big wave paddle surfing.

"The recent craze of tow-in surfing has taken the world by storm, but almost anyone can let go of a rope when they are perfectly positioned by a jet ski with speed on a big wave." said Chris Bertish, O'Neill brand and team manager.

"To paddle out, line up for a big slab of ocean, turn your board around, commit to a wave, paddle your heart out and have the courage to take the drop ? that is what big wave surfing is all about."

Being a unique South African event, only SA surfers will be allowed to enter, but they must be pictured on a wave that is classified as 15ft or bigger to be considered for an award.

All nomination rides must be sent to O'Neill, at rawcourage awards@oneillsa.com.

Entries will be available for viewing on www.oneillsa.com, where they will be judged and voted for over the year.

The five awards categories are: the Raw Courage Award, for the biggest wave paddled into, ridden and completed; Balls to the Wall Award, for the most committed surfer; the Green Room Award for the best big wave barrel; Ultimate Ride of the Year, for the ride of the year and the Biggest Wave Award for the biggest ridden wave of the year, including tow-in surfing.

First prize for the Raw Courage Award is a trip to the world renowned big wave spot, Mavericks, in California, with Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark, valued at R25 000.

Chris Bertish profile - Big Wave Africa 2005 contestant.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 June, 2005 : - - The following is an insight into what makes Chris Bertish tick. Chris has chased Big Waves all over the planet, and last winter scored some good rides at the Cribber in the UK. Most recently he was an invitee at the Red Bull Big Wave Africa event.

Name: Chris Bertish
Occupation: Gul Surf Brand Manager
Outside of work: Big wave freak
Age: 30
Alias: Cristo

Places paddle surfed previously at 15ft+, Crayfish Factory-South Africa, Sunset- South Africa,Dungeons- South Africa, Todos Santos- Mexico, Mavericks- Northern California, Wiamea- Oahu, Hawaii, Jaws-Maui, Hawaii

I have been surfing Bigger waves since I was in my teens. The one thing in life, that really gives you a rush… I don’t do drugs, smoke or drink a lot…but I do…crave big nasty waves.

Started Surfing at the age of about 11 years old, I think.

My brothers and I were always super competitive, so I guess that’s what always pushed me…

And after finishing studying at University in South Africa, all I wanted to do was go traveling and surf the biggest nastiest waves the planet had to offer…Which is exactly what I did! And as they say…the rest is history.

Before any of my big trips or events, I start training and preparing for the event, a minimum,
of 5 months beforehand…. Like everything in life’ What you reap is what you sow!’

The training I do to prep for surfing really large surf consists of 5 components:
1. Stamina-Running
2. Breath holding-Underwater training
3. Swim training-Basic lengths training (Sea & pool)
4. Surfing- as much as you can fit in, Work & Surf permitting
5. Flexibility & Strength-Basic stretches & basic exercises. I.e. Push up’s /sit up’s

This training starts a long way ahead of the event, so by the last 3 months I am training twice a day 5 days a week, alternating between the 5 different disciplines not to create to much routine and give the body time to rest and recover. The last 2 months, I start training 5-6 days a week and 2-3 times a day. I pretty much stop drinking 100% and the major focus is solely training!

Good performance and confidence in Big Surf comes from good physical fitness and the knowing you are confident within one’s self. Physically & mentally.

Everybody gets scared in big surf, it’s how you use and channel that fear, which is important!

You have to use it to your advantage. Never hesitate, as hesitation will cause your worst nightmares to become a reality!

So, come along for the ride and I will update you weekly, from the Red Bull Africa,
International, Invitational only event. The second longest running Big Wave event in the world. Home to one of the nastiest, heaviest, ugliest & scariest waves on the planet. Dungeon’s, Cape Town, South Africa….& the only wave in the world, I won’t surf, without water safety!

Picture a deep dark, kelp infested, cold-water spot…3 miles from anywhere. No roads, you can only get there by boat…. 2 milesout in the ocean, off a huge seal colony and home to some of the largest Great White’s on the globe. Now that’s before you even start talking about the Wave! Dungeons is definitely one of the scariest, thickest, most unpredictable & powerful waves on the planet… Keep logging on over the next 4 weeks and I’ll show you
why!

So sit back and enjoy the journey and I ‘ll show you why…only the brave or very stupid get invited to surf Dungeon’s each year for the inaugural Red Bull, Big Wave Africa. I don’t really surf contests, and the contest or prize money really isn’t what it’s about to me….It’s being able to go out and surf one of the worlds heaviest waves, pull into the biggest possible barrels and if you don’t pop back up, there is the best Rescue Team (Shawn Alladio-K38 Water Safety) on the planet, on standby, to pull you out!

So, that’s what it’s all about…. getting the biggest, heaviest, heaving, ice cold barrels the shark & kelp infested ocean has to offer!

Chris Bertish Out!
