Lanai to have say on allowing Jet Skis

POSTED: June 20, 2008

WAILUKU — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources wants to hear from Lanai residents Wednesday about whether they want to see personal watercraft allowed around the island.

An informal public meeting will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hale Kupuna O Lanai, at 1144 Ilima Ave., in Lanai City.

State regulations currently prohibit commercial and recreational use of personal watercraft around both Lanai and Molokai.

“The purpose of this meeting on Lanai is to find out if there is broad general support for Jet Ski riding from residents,” according to a statement by DLNR Chairwoman Laura Thielen.

Some Molokai residents are circulating a petition trying to garner support for personal watercraft; and the DLNR held a similar public meeting on May 8.

In order to lift the prohibition, the state would need to change its administrative rules on the issue. That process involves formal public hearings and approval by the Board of Natural Resources, attorney general and governor, according to the DLNR.

The state would retain the right to prohibit personal watercraft use in areas that could harm the environment or endangered species, such as the humpback whale.

Personal watercraft users would also need to be certified by the state after completing a safety course through the University of Hawaii Community College System.

Anyone needing special accommodations to participate should call Lanai Harbor Agent Sherry Menze at 559-0723.
