COOLANGATTA surfer Dylan Longbottom's reputation as a world-renowned big wave charger has soared to new heights after tackling a monster swell at Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Longbottom, in Tahiti competing in the trials of the Billabong Pro World Tour event, said the death-defying weekend session produced the biggest waves he had ever surfed. "I think I got the two best waves I have had out here," said Longbottom.

"It was an amazing tow session out here with the boys. To get two bombs like that is phenomenal.

"I will definitely have some memories."

Longbottom caught the incredible 5m waves during a free-surfing session on Sunday that followed the opening trial rounds.

He hit the water again yesterday, winning through to the fifth round of the trials to remain in contention for one of two wildcards into the main draw.

The extreme conditions are sure to have fellow Gold Coast surfers Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Bede Burbidge, Dean Morrison, Jay Thompson and Luke Munro feeling a little anxious before the third event of the Dream Tour kicks off on May 8.

The prestigious 80-man trials field has narrowed to 20.

Tahitian 16-year-old Tamaroa McComb, who has moved in with Longbottom and his family at Coolangatta as part of a Billabong mentor program, also progressed with an impressive tube riding display.

The master and the apprentice will now go head-to-head in sudden death round five.

"Tamaroa and I were joking around at home before we came over, wondering what would happen if we were matched up together," said Longbottom.

"He is such a good talent and even though he is super young he charges, especially here in Tahiti."
