Kiwis in with a chance at Australasian Big Wave Awards

Monday 11th February 2008

Australia and New Zealand’s big wave community will gather at Bondi in Sydney on Wednesday night for the presentation of the Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards.

With a prize pool of $40,000, the awards recognise the riders of Australasia’s biggest and most challenging surf. An epic selection of entries was received for the competition, which ran from June 1, 2007, to February 1, 2008. All the contenders, including surfers from West Oz and NZ are flying in for the presentation.

Papatowai in the Catlins region of the South Island of New Zealand has once again produced some of the biggest waves paddled and towed into in Australasia over the past year.

With Biggest wave entries coming from Kiwi Big wave surfers Kyle Davidson and Taane Tokona who with the assistance of Personal water craft rode what some are calling two of the biggest waves recorded at the remote NZ break.

Only two waves were entered in the paddle in division, one coming from New Zealand’s own Doug Young who tackled an un-seasonally big swell last month. Doug has entered paddle in waves every year the awards have run and won the award for biggest paddle in wave of the year in 2004.

With the heights of the waves exceeding the minimum size required by the Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards 2008 of 6.5m, a number of high profiled and under ground Big Wave Chargers have entered waves into the prestigious awards.
