Waveriders to take centre stage at Dublin film festival
27 January 2008 By Nicola Cooke

About 40,000 people are expected to view a host of Irish and international films at the sixth Jameson Dublin International Film Festival to be launched on Tuesday.

Centre stage will be the premiere of the Irish-directed film Waveriders, which tells the story of how the son of an Ulsterman, George Freeth, reintroduced the ancient Polynesian art of wave riding in Hawaii at the start of the 20th century, after it had been stamped out by missionaries.

It traces how Freeth went on to transform and popularise the sport in California where he became the world’s first lifeguard while also following top modern surfers.

These include surfer Richard Fitzgerald from Bundoran, and British surf champion Gabe Davies. The story climaxes with their attempt to ride a big wave off the west coast of Ireland using the newly-introduced technique of tow surfing (where a surfer is towed into a breaking wave by a partner driving a personal watercraft).

The film festival runs from February 15 to 24, with new festival director Grainne Humphreys at the helm. Festival director Joanne Hynes said the plan was to increase audience capacity and the profile of the festival over the next three years.

‘‘We have 40 international guests, and the on-screen project this year,” Hynes said. ‘‘This involves projecting footage or films onto the exterior of the locations they were shot in.

‘‘For example, some of The Spy who Came in from the Cold was shot in Grangegorman so it will be projected in Smithfield. O’Connell Street and Trinity College are other venues for this project. It is also our first year in Dundrum cinema, as we reach out further to our audience,” she said.

Dublin city’s main cinemas and the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar will also have screenings. In Bruges, the feature film by Martin McDonagh, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, will open the festival.
