Press release
1/21/2008 7:06:18 PM
Surfing legend Dave Kalama is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui's Big Reader program. On Jan. 24 Dave Kalama will be reading to Wailuku Elementary School's entire third grade class. Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Reader program promotes the value of literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children.
“We want to help young children develop a life-long love for reading!” said Char Tomas, Big Brothers Big Sisters Program Supervisor, “We encourage the Maui and Molokai's community to devote some time to read to our local elementary schools through our BBBS Big Reader Program.”
Dave Kalama elected to read Shel Silverstein's “The Giving Tree” a short morale story about a relationship between a child and nature, fitting selection for someone like Dave, who spends most of time devoted to the ocean.
“We are absolutely honored Dave Kalama would consider taking time to reach out to our local elementary schools”, said Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive
Director Melissa Ross, “Our kids are very lucky to have someone as inspirational as Dave to look up; he's a great role model for our future generations.”
Dave Kalama is an all-around Hawaiian waterman who comes from a lineage of surfing champions. He is a master wave rider, who began as a world champion windsurfer, and has evolved into one of the pioneers and premier big wave, tow-in surfers of our time. Dave has become a key team rider for Quiksilver and will be seen in upcoming feature films, television and video/DVD programs.
