O’Neill South Africa’s “Raw Courage Big Wave Awards” receives new entries
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 December, 2007 : - - New entries have been submitted for the prestigious O'Neill's Raw Courage Big Wave Awards, launched in May this year. New submissions include waves ridden by Grant Twiggy Baker & Chris Bertish ridden three weeks ago at a windy, but serious session at Dungeons, in Cape Town, South Africa.
The other two more recent entrants have both been submitted from abroad, of South African chargers Duncan Scott riding one of the biggest waves ever ridden off a remote spot seldom ridden in Ireland last week.
The most recent is an amazing entry submitted of local Cape Town big wave charger Andrew Marr pushing the limits of paddle in surfing to new heights, with possibly one of the biggest waves ever paddled into and ridden successfully at Todos Santos, Mexico, early last week.
All the new nominations can be viewed on oneillsa.com or directly to the Raw Courage Awards from oneillsa.com/Events/Raw-Courage-Awards.asp. The O'Neill Raw Courage Awards was launched to credit all South African Big Wave riders who are charging and pushing the boundaries of big wave surfing in South Africa and abroad.

“ We are excited and impressed with the recent entries coming in, which just demonstrates the level of commitment and talent coming out of South Africa in the big wave arena and this is just the beginning of the northern hemisphere winter, so we expect to see plenty more big entries coming in over the next couple of months," commented Chris Bertish, O’Neill Brand Manager.
O’Neill has also upped the prize money for the winning photographer or videographer who captures the winning waves in each division, to a minimum of R1000 for all divisions; however, the submissions need to be submitted within ten days of the session taking place.
The Raw Courage Award for the biggest paddle wave, fetches a first prize purse of over R25 000, which O’Neill Brand Manager Chris Bertish says he intends to double for the following year’s event. All submissions need to be sent to rawcourageawards@oneillsa.com and all details of the event, a gallery, as well as the rules and guidelines can be viewed on the website, which is constantly updated.
About O'Neill
O’Neill, the original Californian surf, snow and lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O’Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world’s first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after.
While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack’s initial vision of producing functional and innovative board riding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O’Neill’s set of core values – innovation in style and technology – has seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of action sports. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the world’s first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O’Neill’s spirit of innovation will always drive the company forwards.
Today, O’Neill can be found the world over. In touch with its rich heritage and the universal stoke of board riding culture, O’Neill will always be committed to progressing that evolution and growing its reputation as one of the world’s leading youth lifestyle brands.
